Summary

Felix Ever After meets Becky Albertalli in this swoon-worthy, heartfelt rom-com about how a transgender teen’s first love challenges his ideas about perfect relationships。

Noah Ramirez thinks he’s an expert on romance。 He has to be for his popular blog, the Meet Cute Diary, a collection of trans happily ever afters。 There’s just one problem—all the stories are fake。 What started as the fantasies of a trans boy afraid to step out of the closet has grown into a beacon of hope for trans readers across the globe。

When a troll exposes the blog as fiction, Noah’s world unravels。 The only way to save the Diary is to convince everyone that the stories are true, but he doesn’t have any proof。 Then Drew walks into Noah’s life, and the pieces fall into place: Drew is willing to fake-date Noah to save the Diary。 But when Noah’s feelings grow beyond their staged romance, he realizes that dating in real life isn’t quite the same as finding love on the page。

In this charming novel by Emery Lee, Noah will have to choose between following his own rules for love or discovering that the most romantic endings are the ones that go off script。

I’ll be honest and say I expected the world out of this book。 It had the cutest cover, a fake dating premise, a trans triracial lead, and an author who’s twitter I adore。 (Yes that’s a good reason to like a book, don’t @ me)。 But there was a lot about the book that I didn’t like。 However, I still adore so many other aspects and a lot of the representation that the book provides。 Let’s start with the good, and the reason why I still think you should read this book。 The thing that stuck out to me I’ll be honest and say I expected the world out of this book。 It had the cutest cover, a fake dating premise, a trans triracial lead, and an author who’s twitter I adore。 (Yes that’s a good reason to like a book, don’t @ me)。 But there was a lot about the book that I didn’t like。 However, I still adore so many other aspects and a lot of the representation that the book provides。 Let’s start with the good, and the reason why I still think you should read this book。 The thing that stuck out to me was the neopronoun use, the most prolific being the e/em use for Devin, a friend (view spoiler)[ AND ANOTHER LOVE INTEREST (hide spoiler)] of Noah’s who experimented with pronouns throughout the book。 E was also my favorite character because e was a vibe and very well-developed。 His best friend, Becca was also a lovely lesbian character who I still think deserved better but she felt like a realistic character。 His brother Brian is also a giant himbo but I love him and the support and relationship that he has with Noah The depiction of a toxic relationship and the running of the Tumblr blog, “The Meet Cute Diary,” and how internet drama works is also really realistic and very interesting, honestly I wanted a little more insight into that。 And now, because I can’t really avoid it anymore, let’s talk about the main character, Noah。 oh my god, I hate him。 Seriously, Noah, for being someone who claims to be running a blog for other trans people to see love stories, you seriously have really made this about yourself and have acted like you’re the only one hurt with the mistakes made in the blog。 As a person, he is so incredibly entitled and obnoxious。 I understand that he’s young, but almost everyone I know around his age has way more common sense, decency, and empathy than he does。 He is a little shit to everyone in his life, especially Becca and Devin, like someone throws up right in front of you, and you have the audacity to be disgusted and then be continually rude to that person after instead of I don’t know ASKING IF THEYRE OKAY。 He’s only nice to Drew, who he of course thinks is perfect and who he instantly falls in love with, because of course he does。 。。。more

First of all, can we not appreciate the representation in this book? The MC, Noah, is Afro-Latino, Japanese, and White。 He is also Trans。 His friend Devin is Questioning and throughout the book tries to find emself by using different pronouns to see what fits。I love that the story centers around a Tumblog where Noah writes what he calls “Meet Cutes” that end up being fictional to bring happiness to Trans people everywhere that they too can find love。 Did I think at times that Meet Cute Diary was First of all, can we not appreciate the representation in this book? Yes! THIS BOOK WAS AWESOME! I read this book thru my local library, but I liked it enough that I think I'm going to buy myself a copy! The use of neo pronouns in this book was superb。 I've never seen xe/xem and e/em pronouns used in context before, they make so much more sense to me now! I'd definitely like to read more books of yours! 。。。more

oooh boy。this gets a star extra for the fantastic trans rep (a trans man + a nonbinary person who uses neopronouns & is still figuring it out), because i felt it was really well done and organically written into the story。 i loved devin as a character and em exploring er gender and trying different pronouns was really great to read。but that's kind of where it ends at enjoyability for me。 i did not like the main character for the majority of this book。 i'm normally okay with reading a book with a oooh boy。this gets a star extra for the fantastic trans rep (a trans man + a nonbinary person who uses neopronouns & is still figuring it out), because i felt it was really well done and organically written into the story。 i loved devin as a character and em exploring er gender and trying different pronouns was really great to read。but that's kind of where it ends at enjoyability for me。 i did not like the main character for the majority of this book。 i'm normally okay with reading a book with a main character i don't like, because there are still a lot of other redeeming qualities。 and sometimes the main character being unlikable (and sometimes changes throughout the book) is the point! but here it was very much not。noah is a self-claimed expert in romance, because he writes these sweet meet-cute stories on his tumblr blog where trans people find love。 the premise was great, but the main character very quickly soured the story for me。 from the moment he meets drew, who offers to fake-date him to save the meet-cute diary from being exposed as fake, noah pushes this idea onto drew that they will fall in love for real, with little to no care for how drew feels about it。 because 'that's how romantic stories go'。 this behavior by noah was never directly questioned or challenged on the page and it made me extremely uncomfortable。spoilers here:then the reveal comes that drew is only interested in noah because of the diary and turns out to be a dick。 it felt like a really cheap reveal to me。 i don't think i've ever met someone who would treat a person like that over a dying blog that has maybe a couple thousand followers。 it just felt over the top i-need-you-to-hate-this-guy writing。 it was successful, but also really cheap。 drew just became a cartoon villain, instead of a guy with some toxic ideas of what relationships should be like。spoilers endthen noah also treats his brother and best friend as expendable side characters。 although they are side characters in this book, they shouldn't so obviously feel like them, let alone be treated like them by the main character。 from every interaction it was clear that noah didn't care about them and only leaned on them for support, never offering it in return。in short: devin deserved better 。。。more

3。5 stars。 This was a super cute and wholesome YA with a fake-dating trope that subverted my expectations (which I'm SO happy about - Drew is an ass and I hated his and Noah's dynamic)。 I also loved the much-needed lgbtq+ representation this book had (including a trans protagonist and an ace trans-nonbinary love interest who uses neopronouns!!! we love to see it!!) I honestly dont reccomend。 The storyline was really hard to follow。 I couldnt even finish it as i got to the end。 He gets a boyfriend but unlike other books he dosnt describe what he felt when kissing or even holding hands。 And the relationship goes wayyyy too fast。 10 out of 10 would not reccomend。 But if you like romance novels try Lola and the boy next door, and Anna and the french kiss by stenphanie perkins。 Also Eleanor and Park by Ranbow Rowell is a good one。 I wouldnt waste time reading t I honestly dont reccomend。 The storyline was really hard to follow。 I couldnt even finish it as i got to the end。 He gets a boyfriend but unlike other books he dosnt describe what he felt when kissing or even holding hands。 And the relationship goes wayyyy too fast。 10 out of 10 would not reccomend。 But if you like romance novels try Lola and the boy next door, and Anna and the french kiss by stenphanie perkins。 Also Eleanor and Park by Ranbow Rowell is a good one。 I wouldnt waste time reading this。 Not very descriptive。 。。。more

Noah was annoying and self-centred for at least 85% of this and it really annoyed so that’s why it’s lower than I would have originally put it。 However, Devin had the best rep for changing pronouns (something I usually don’t see)。

Devin is such a sweet, innocent, precious gem! On the contrary, I really really disliked Noah, the MC。 I felt he was very self centered and whiny and he showed very little growth throughout the story。 Actually, it was because of Noah's character that my enjoyment of this book decreased。 But Devin made up for Noah's drawbacks。That said, I would highly recommend you all to pick this up。 Even if the story is typical, it is from the pov of people who rarely get any representation in mainstream media and that's what made this book so likable and unique for me。Also, Devin! Dang :/I’m a little disappointed, considering how adorable the cover is and the concept。 However, I had many issues with this。 While I loved the queer representation and how there wasn’t much transphobia or homophobia in the story, the main character Noah I feel went through little to no development。 He remains the same I feel like from the beginning to end, and the reader is just expected to believe he went through growth because we were just told that he did。 This might be a mild spoiler, but Dang :/I’m a little disappointed, considering how adorable the cover is and the concept。 However, I had many issues with this。 While I loved the queer representation and how there wasn’t much transphobia or homophobia in the story, the main character Noah I feel went through little to no development。 He remains the same I feel like from the beginning to end, and the reader is just expected to believe he went through growth because we were just told that he did。 This might be a mild spoiler, but I’m not really a fan of love triangles all that much either, especially in ya contemporary novels。 The story’s main message of all trans people deserve love felt a bit lost in the mess that was the love triangle and relationship drama。 I thought the cuteness of this book would have been overwhelming and adorable, but I felt just kind of let down slightly because it wasn’t what I thought。Only reason I really finished and enjoyed this was for Devin。 Devin saved the book。 The love triangle though?
